Ozempic® vs Wegovy®: what is the difference?
August 4, 2026 · 6 min read

Both contain semaglutide and both are made by the same manufacturer — but they are approved for different things, and dosed differently.
Ozempic® and Wegovy® come up constantly in the same conversation, and for good reason: they contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and they are made by the same manufacturer. The difference is not the molecule. It is what each one is approved for and how it is dosed.
Ozempic® is approved by the FDA to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. Wegovy® is approved for chronic weight management in adults and certain adolescents who meet specific criteria. Same active ingredient, two separate approvals, two separate labels.
That distinction matters more than it might seem. A medication's approved indication determines how it can be prescribed and advertised, and it is why you will see the two names used carefully rather than interchangeably. A licensed clinician decides which — if either — fits your situation, based on your health history rather than on which name you arrived searching for.
Dosing also differs. The two products follow different titration schedules and reach different maintenance doses, which is part of why they are not simply substitutes for one another. Both are once-weekly injections.
If you are weighing the two, the useful question is not which is better in the abstract but which is appropriate for you. That is what an assessment is for: a clinician reviews your history, current medications, and goals, and tells you what they recommend — including when the answer is neither.
This article is educational and is not a substitute for personalized medical advice. Whether any medication is appropriate for you is a decision for a licensed clinician who has reviewed your health history.
