Zepbound® vs Mounjaro®: what is the difference?

Two brand names, one active ingredient — tirzepatide. Here is what separates them and why the distinction exists.

Zepbound® and Mounjaro® follow the same pattern as Ozempic® and Wegovy®: one active ingredient, tirzepatide, sold under two brand names with two different FDA approvals.

Mounjaro® is approved to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Zepbound® is approved for chronic weight management in adults who meet specific criteria. The manufacturer is the same for both.

Tirzepatide is sometimes described as a dual agonist because it acts on two gut hormone pathways — GLP-1 and GIP — rather than one. That is the mechanistic difference between tirzepatide and semaglutide, which acts on the GLP-1 pathway alone. Whether that difference matters for you specifically is a clinical judgment, not a general rule.

Both are once-weekly injections and both follow a gradual dose-escalation schedule that starts low. Clinicians typically increase the dose slowly, which is as much about tolerability as it is about reaching a target.
