High-protein breakfasts and snacks for a small appetite

Practical, low-effort options that get protein in when fullness arrives after a few bites — including what to keep in the house for a bad day.
Breakfast is where protein on a GLP-1 usually goes wrong, because morning is often when appetite is lowest and time is shortest. The fix is not elaborate cooking. It is a short list of compact, soft, protein-dense things you will actually eat, kept in the house.
What makes an option work on a small appetite?
- Protein-dense per bite, since there will not be many bites.
- Soft or moist rather than dry — dry food is harder when gastric emptying is slow.
- Low effort. Low appetite plus low energy means the nearest acceptable thing wins.
- Lower in fat, especially on the day after an injection.
- Portionable. A full bowl you abandon is worse than a small one you finish.
Breakfasts that tend to work
| Effort | Options |
|---|---|
| None | Greek yogurt; cottage cheese; a glass of milk or fortified alternative; a protein shake; kefir |
| A few minutes | Scrambled or boiled eggs; yogurt with berries and chia; overnight oats made with milk; cottage cheese on toast |
| A little cooking | Omelette with whatever is in the fridge; smoked fish on toast; eggs with beans |
| Batch ahead | Egg muffins; overnight oats in jars; a pot of lentil soup for non-sweet mornings |
If sweet food is unappealing in the morning — common on a GLP-1 — soup, eggs or leftovers are a perfectly reasonable breakfast. There is no rule that breakfast must be breakfast food.
Snacks that carry protein
- Cottage cheese or Greek yogurt in small pots.
- Hard-boiled eggs, made in advance.
- Tinned fish — tuna, sardines, mackerel — with crackers.
- Edamame, roasted chickpeas, or a small handful of nuts (higher in fat, so better away from injection day).
- Cheese with fruit.
- A protein shake split across two sittings, which often goes down better than one full one.
What to keep stocked
Pick three things from the lists above that you genuinely like, and keep them in the house permanently. That is the whole strategy. On a bad day nobody follows a meal plan; they eat what is there. Making what is there useful is the highest-value thing you can do in a supermarket.
A note on protein shakes
Useful, and not a complete answer. Some people find whey-based shakes trigger burping and nausea, so a different protein source may suit you better. Shakes also bring no fiber, which matters for constipation. Use them as the floor under your protein intake rather than the whole of it.
Targets for protein and total intake are individual and belong to your clinician or a dietitian, particularly if you have any kidney condition.
