GLP-1 side effects: what is common and what to do
May 27, 2026 · 6 min read

The side effects people most often report on GLP-1 medications, why they tend to appear early, and when to contact your care team.
Most people starting a GLP-1 medication want to know the same thing: what is this going to feel like. The honest answer is that it varies, but the pattern is reasonably well described.
The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, and changes in digestion. They tend to show up in the early weeks and after a dose increase, which is precisely why clinicians start low and escalate slowly rather than beginning at a maintenance dose.
Practical adjustments often help: smaller portions, eating more slowly, and paying attention to which foods sit badly. Your care team can suggest specifics, and can slow down a dose increase if the current step is not being tolerated well.
Some side effects are not something to manage at home. There are symptoms that warrant contacting a clinician promptly, and your care team will tell you what those are for your specific situation when treatment starts. Message them rather than waiting for a scheduled check-in — adjusting a plan is routine and expected.
For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Telehealth is not the right route for urgent symptoms.
