Who is actually treating you when care happens through a website — licensure, independent practices, and when telehealth is the wrong tool.
A reasonable question to ask of any healthcare website: who is actually treating me? With legitimate telehealth, the answer is specific — licensed clinicians, practicing under the license of the state you are in, working through established medical practices. The website is the venue, not the provider.
How can I check who is treating me?
State licensure is the piece most people do not realize they can check. Clinicians are licensed by state boards, those registers are public, and a legitimate service will tell you which practices provide its care so you can verify a license yourself. If a service will not say who its clinicians are, that is an answer in itself.
Will I talk to someone, or is it all online?
Telehealth visits come in two forms: asynchronous review, where a clinician evaluates your written assessment and messages you, and live video visits. Which is appropriate depends on your case and your state's rules — some situations and some states require a conversation, and a clinician who needs one will say so rather than skipping it.
When is telehealth the wrong tool?
It is equally worth being clear about what telehealth is not for. Emergencies, symptoms that need a physical examination, and care that requires in-person testing belong with local providers. A good telehealth clinician refers out when your situation calls for it — that referral is the system working.
